National Night Out, Texas Style!

Because Texas in August tends to be extremely hot, National Night Out this year is moving to Oct. 7.
National Night Out is an annual crime-prevention event that for 24 years has taken place on the first Tuesday in August.
This year’s switch throughout Texas to the first Tuesday in October is a test to see how it goes, National Night Out spokesman Matt Peskin told me. The other 49 states will keep the August date.
What’s pretty interesting is that Texas’ undeniably hot August weather appears to be getting hotter, according to post-event reports sent in each year to the National Night Out headquarters in suburban Philadelphia.
Texas towns that recorded temperatures of 99 or 100 a few years ago turned in reports of 103 or 104 degrees the last couple years, Peskin told me by phone.
It does seem to be the state where most of the heat complaints come from. [Peskin]
